Clickwill
Roadmap

Where Clickwill is going.

I build Clickwill after hours, one iPod at a time. This is what's done, what I'm working on right now and what comes next. Every release, big or small, also gets a post under Release notes.

  1. 0.1 · Released

    First public alpha

    • Cover Flow, album order with a preview of the iPod's Albums menu, track order
    • Covers, album details and song titles, edited right on the iPod
    • Pending changes and Write to iPod, a backup before every write, restore from Backups
    • Add songs from your Mac, FLAC and hi-res converted on the way; play counts kept
    • Add a single song anywhere in an album
    • Import CDs without Apple Music, names and cover from MusicBrainz
    • No duplicate albums: an album already on the iPod is recognized, even without tags
    • Search, sort, edit and play in Songs
    • A native macOS window, sidebar, toolbar and Add Songs window
    • Welcome cards, Send Feedback and updates inside the app
    • Signed and notarized by Apple
  2. 0.2 · In progress

    Native look, everywhere

    • The rest of the screens in the native macOS style
    • Tips where you need them, after the welcome cards
  3. Next · Planned

    Adding music, better

    • Choose the format when adding songs: keep it, Apple Lossless, or AAC to save space
    • Drop files straight onto the window
    • Playlists: create, rename, fill and reorder them
    • An iPod health check: songs without files, missing covers and duplicates, fixed in one click
  4. Later · Planned

    More iPods

    • The 2007 and 2008 iPod classic tested on real hardware (editing is already on for them)
    • Editing on the iPod nano 3rd and 4th generation
    • Editing on older iPods, starting with the iPod nano 2nd generation, then the 1st generation, iPod 4th and 5th generation and iPod mini
    • Video on the iPods that can play it

iPods other than the iPod classic open read-only until I've tested them on the real thing.

Not on the list.

Clickwill edits the library Apple's own software reads, and that's where it stays.

  • Rockbox or any custom firmware
  • Syncing a folder from your Mac
  • Smart playlists
  • Podcast subscriptions
  • Photos
  • iPod nano 5th to 7th generation
  • iPod shuffle and iPod touch
Updates

Release notes.

A milestone is a big update from the roadmap. An update brings fixes and small improvements, and a hotfix is an urgent fix.

Update

A clearer welcome

The welcome window is now a single page in the style of Apple's own apps, with the four things to know before you edit your iPod: keep Music closed, nothing changes until you choose Write to iPod, a backup comes before every write, and editing is for the iPod classic.

  • Clickwill no longer loses the iPod when it disconnects for a moment while the library is loading
  • An iPod nano or another read-only iPod no longer pushes the player and sidebar off the window, and the lock explains why writing is off
Milestone

First public alpha

The first version anyone can download. It edits the library on the iPod classic and opens other iPods read-only, so you can look around without risk.

  • Cover Flow with the order you set, and a preview of the iPod's Albums menu
  • Change covers, album details and song titles, reorder songs and play them from the iPod
  • Pending changes, Write to iPod, a backup before every write and restore from the Backups screen
  • Add songs and albums from your Mac, with FLAC and hi-res converted on the way; a new album shows in Cover Flow right away
  • Add a single song anywhere in an album, and an album already on the iPod is recognized instead of added twice
  • Import CDs without Apple Music, with names, year, genre and cover from MusicBrainz
  • The whole library in Songs: search, sort, rename, delete and play
  • A native macOS window with a sidebar and toolbar
  • Welcome cards, Send Feedback, and a check for updates once a day that asks before it installs
  • Signed and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other Mac app
