Do you need Rockbox on your iPod classic?
Rockbox is free, open source software that replaces what your iPod runs. It's a great project, and for some people it's the right choice. But most of the reasons people install it on an iPod classic, like FLAC, missing covers or albums in the wrong order, can be fixed without replacing anything.
I make Clickwill, which works with Apple's original iPod software, so keep that in mind. Facts about Rockbox checked 4 October 2026.
Install Rockbox if you want a different player: Ogg or Opus files, folders instead of a library, equalizers, themes and plugins. If you like the iPod the way Apple made it, Cover Flow included, and mostly want FLAC, the right covers and your own album order, you don't need Rockbox.
Side by side
| Apple's software | Rockbox | |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | The iPod as Apple made it, with Cover Flow | Its own interface, with themes |
| How you add music | A library on the iPod, written by an app like Finder, Music or Clickwill | Copy folders to the iPod; Rockbox can also build its own database from the tags |
| FLAC | Converted to Apple Lossless first, which sounds the same at CD quality | Plays it directly |
| Other formats | MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV, AIFF | Many more, including Ogg Vorbis and Opus |
| Extras | What Apple built in | Equalizer, plugins, games, many settings |
| Installing | Nothing to install | Rockbox Utility puts a bootloader and Rockbox on the iPod |
When Rockbox is the right choice
- You have music the iPod can't play, like Ogg Vorbis or Opus, and don't want to convert it.
- You'd rather manage folders than a library. With Rockbox you copy folders to the iPod and that's it.
- You like to tinker: equalizer settings, themes, plugins.
Rockbox 4.0, released in April 2025, lists the iPod classic and the iPod with video among its stable ports, and the Rockbox Utility installs it. On many players it can sit next to the original software. Read the Rockbox manual for your model before you install.
When you don't need it
These are the usual reasons people give for installing Rockbox on an iPod classic. Each one has a fix that keeps Apple's software:
- "I want FLAC on my iPod." Convert it to Apple Lossless as you add it. At CD quality the audio is exactly the same. How to put FLAC on an iPod classic.
- "My covers are missing." Add them to the album on the iPod. How to add missing album artwork.
- "My albums are in the wrong order." Put them in your own order, by year for example. How to change the album order.
- "I don't want iTunes or Music anymore." You don't need either to manage the iPod. How to put songs on an iPod classic without iTunes.
What you give up with Rockbox
Mostly the iPod itself, as Apple designed it: its menus, its fonts and Cover Flow. Rockbox has its own interface and its own way of browsing albums. For many people, that original interface is the reason they still use an iPod classic.
Questions
Do I need Rockbox to play FLAC on an iPod classic?
No. Rockbox plays FLAC directly, but you can also convert FLAC to Apple Lossless, which the original iPod software plays. At CD quality the audio is exactly the same. Clickwill does the conversion when it adds the songs.
Does Rockbox still work on the iPod classic?
Yes. Rockbox 4.0, released in April 2025, lists the iPod classic and the iPod with video among its stable ports. It's installed with the Rockbox Utility.
Can I keep Apple's iPod software if I install Rockbox?
On many players Rockbox can sit next to the original software, so you can start either one. Check the Rockbox manual for your iPod model before you install.
Does Clickwill work with Rockbox?
Not yet. Today Clickwill edits the library of Apple's original iPod software, and Rockbox doesn't use the order and covers it sets. Support for iPods running Rockbox is on the roadmap for later.
